The history of Denon turntables commenced in 1910 with the production of Japan’s first gramophone and peaked in 1939 when Denon developed a disc recorder for NHK. Denon turntables were used not only by general users but by many radio stations professionals as well. In 1970, Denon developed its own high-torque AC motor for low speeds where speed was controlled by highly precise detection of magnetic pulses recorded around the perimeter of the platter.
Denon incorporated this epoch-making servo technology in its development of the direct-drive turntable whose high performance and reliability represented a clear break from conventional idler and belt drive products, and earned Denon a solid position as the brand for players used at radio stations. In the following year, the turntable was adapted for consumer use, and Denon, which continued to produce direct-drive players, became an unforgettable brand of analog players among audio enthusiasts. The DP-A100 player is being released as a Denon anniversary model with the same high-performance Denon direct-drive turntable technology that has delivered cogging-free, high-precision rotation for 40 years. Equipped with the DL-A100 cartridge, the DP-A100 is capable of masterfully reproducing the energy and beauty of analog discs. Drive system: Quartz lock servo control direct drive system. Speed: 33-1/3, 45 rpm.
Speed deviation: 0.002% or less. Wow & flutter: 0.1% or less (wrms). Rotation stability time: 0.3 sec. Or less to reach normal speed.

One of the ultimate LP record players launched shortly before digital disc would definitely change the landscape. Belkin hacked firmware. It isn't 'the' absolute LP replay machine (absolute-ness isn't of this world) but measured performance is simply stunning and, unlike what its looks may indicate, the DP-100 was targeted at the consumer market. The center of the DP-100: a 15 x 14 cm stator, leaf spring + oil decoupled 6,850 kg two-piece platter and a 13 x 13 cm rotor holding 21 coils.

The shaft is 1,4 cm in diameter. At the center of this is the AU-169 Unit motor, which was first presented by Denon at the 1979 Japan Audio Fair and developed for cutting lathes - hence the presence of that all too often used icon on each of the many ads Denon published in Japan. Albeit enormous, the version inside the DP-100 is however somewhat smaller than the AU-169 - especially its power-supply! The top frame is made of a c. 1.4 cm thick single diecast aluminium piece, rectified and finished in hammered style with a varnish added. Although not Denon's forte, ever, this one color + finish team is absolutely beautiful.
The four feet mix springs, an articulated piston and oil to isolate a total mass of 48 kg. The speed locking system is equivalent to that of any 1970s Denon or Sony turntable: a 1000 magnetic pulses are printed on the platter's rim, read by a magnetic head and fed into a Quartz PLL loop. The small front lid hides the secondary controls: speed selection, pitch control, anti-skating & lifter speed (for the ) plus two controls which only the stock tonearm allows - Cut off frequency between 3 Hz and 13 Hz and Q Damping to tame the inherent 8 Hz resonance of the tonearm. The tonearm installed on the DP-100 is of the Dynamic Servo Tracer kind: filled with coils, magnets and sensors to effectively follow the groove in an 'active' manner.
Like a Sony Biotracer but simpler. Wands are interchangeable: medium weight in 'S' shape or low-weight in straight shape; the straight wand is made of ' a special light alloy which has been heat-treated, like a cartridge cantilever'.
The DP-100 is the barenaked arm-less version but, like the, it has an interchangeable armboard to fit any other tonearm of almost any size: the original one measures 28,2 cm. An optional DK-1000 wood+leather enclosure pushed the bill to 1,100,000 ¥ but only about one on ten DP-100 was fitted with it. The total production run for the DP-100 and is anybody's guess but should be around 250 pieces.
The highest serial number spotted in Japan (on a 100) bears an 11 8 118 ('11' means Denon factory, '5' is product run (or month?) and '118' is the actual s/n); another (on a 100M) has an #11 3 088. The highest DK-1000 serial spotted is #67 so either more DP-100/m were made or more DK-1000. From these and others we can guess a production running over several months, each run quite possibly launched when enough orders had been received. Denon in Japan doesn't remember anyhting but Denon in Germany recently unearthed a forgotten demo sample in its warehouse (!) and it bears a n°3 serial number (probably a pre-prod. The last prototype, shown at the 1980 Japan Audio Fair, was at the same time completely different and somewhat equivalent: more obvious consumer design (less 'streamlined') and smaller in width, depth and height but the link between the two is evident (unlike the original 1978 proto' and the final product). It should be noted that around 1991 Denon planned and built a fully finished and functional studio turntable prototype named DP-X to try and come back into high-end LP replay. This DP-X was however not produced: ten years was too long an absence for a come-back.
A real 100M, with serial #11 2 003. ('11' is the regular Denon prefix, for all that was built in-house; '003' is the actual s/n).
Exceptional DENON DP-1000 Direct Drive All-Manual Turntable with INFINTY Black Widow Tonearm Mounted Upon the Matching DENON DP-1500 Plinth all in Excellent Condition – No Issues! NOTE: This turntable is being sold without a cartridge / stylus. The Cartridge shown in the photos is my test cartridge and is not for sale.
Not many people know that Denon is in fact a very old company. It was founded in 1910 as a joint venture by Emile Berliner (Gramophone Company) and Alexander Graham Bell (Columbia Gramophone Company). The Japan Gramophone Company later became the Nippon Columbia, and in 1938 they created Denon as their professional equipment brand. They also introduced the first ever direct drive turntable the same year!
This Denon DP-1000 is an excellent heavy duty direct-drive turntable that is mounted on its extremely robust and factory matched Denon DP-1500 Plinth and hinged dustcover. The Infinity Black Widow tonearm is all-manual and also looks and plays beautifully. This is a rock-solid combination that performs flawlessly and looks gorgeous. This is a turntable package where the tonearm is worth more than the turntable and plinth. This Infinity Black Widow tonearm is a very famous low-mass tonearm that sounds wonderful, works flawlessly, and has no issues. The cueing mechanism is a smooth and steady drop and everything is factory stock parts.
This is the original iteration of the Infinity Black Widow with the aluminum tone arm shaft. The D-1500 plinth, the hinged Perspex dustcover and DP-1000 platter are in beautiful condition with no major blemishes or issues.
There is a very tiny fleck off the front edge of the plinth to the right of the Denon logo – not immediately noticeable. You can see it in the photo with the lid down about 1/4' from the front corner.
There is also a small ding on the top side edge about 2' from the front corner. There are a few extremely minor marks on the sides of the platter cover, as well as some very small marks on the top and sides of the plinth – so small that they don’t show up in the photos. There is a slight bit of tarnish / corrosion on the chrome plates that form the upper part of the dustcover hinges. The plastic dustcover has quite a few scuffs and scratches all over the top surface. No single major mark, but enough accumulation of blemishes to create some hazing. There are no cracks, chips or other major defects and the hinge interface works as new. The speed control works beautifully, and the motor holds speed nicely.
The window that displays the strobe is in great shape, however there is some dust on the interior of the window. The Denon DP-1000 is somewhat rare in the USA, and is not even listed in the AudiogoN Bluebook. I wasn’t able to find an English language owners manual, but found one in Japanese at the Denon Museum – here is the link: Specifications for Denon DP-1000 Turntable:.

Denon Manuals
This model is set to USA voltages (117 Watts / 60 Hz). I have seen two other DP-1000 turntables and DP-1500 plinth combinations sell without tonearms, and in general they have sold for about $225 - $250 depending on cosmetic condition.
Denon Avr Manuals
The Infinity Black Widow tonearms routinely sell for $300 to $350 depending on condition and which version. Here is a great opportunity to buy a high end audiophile turntable system that is both beautiful and functions without issue. Note that I would prefer to sell this locally rather than disassemble and package for shipment. I am happy to deliver to you for free if you are local to me in the San Francisco, Berkeley or Marin County area. NOTE: This turntable is being sold without a cartridge / stylus. The Cartridge shown in the photos is my test cartridge and is not for sale.
